Fun Sight Word Ideas!

Trying to make learning fun can sometimes be hard.  Here are some fantastic ideas for learning and reviewing sight words.  These games are great to play one-on-one with your child or even making them into a family game night idea would be great too!

Sight Word Connection:  This is a take off of the game Connect Four.  Simply take small price dot stickers and write the sight words your child needs the most work on.  Each time a new chip is placed into the slot you or your child must read it.  The first one to get four in a row wins!  Super fun!

Sight Word Twister:  What child doesn't like to play Twister?  I know that this was my most favorite game growing up.  This is a great way to get active, play and learn all at the same time!  The preparation is very easy, write different sight words on index cards and tape them on the different colored dots.  As you tell your children to place hands and feet on different colors ask them to read you the sight word before they put their hand or foot down!  Great way to get your kids engaged in learning and can be fun for the whole family!

Sight Word Parking Lot:  The kids in my class LOVE this sight word game.  It is very easy to make. The only materials you will need include:  markers, poster board, and play cars.  Make your own parking lot! Write the chosen sight words in different parking spots.  I usually have a class set of sight word flash cards that I like to give my students to flip over and read.  After they read the sight word they then have to find the right parking spot for their car.  They have a lot of fun driving their cars around and finding the right parking spot!

Sight Word Fishing:  For this game you will need to cut out or print off your computer different fish outlines.  After you have printed and cut out the fish, write the different sight words of your choice on each fish.  I took paper clips and clipped them on each, this way the magnet at the end of the fishing pole can be easily attracted.  For your fishing poles I recommend using a thin wooden dowel.  Tape or tie onto the dowel a string or twine, and then at the end of the twine tie a strong magnet.  As your child fishes for different sight words ask them what the words are they catch!  This is another class favorite!

Sight Word Bug Squash:  Using your computer, print off different types of bugs.  They don't have to be flies, the more different and interesting looking the better!  On each bug write a different sight word.  Call out specific sight words you want your child to swat with their bug swatter!  Kids get a kick out of using bug swatters in school!  Have fun :)
